Dr. Norwood K. “Woody” Ford, 90, passed away Sunday, April 3 at his Louisville home with his children by his side after a long hard fought battle with cancer. Born March 1, 1932, he was a resident of Louisville for most of his life, a graduate of Manual High School, and the University of Louisville where he excelled in medical school. While at U of L, he was president of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He worked at LG&E as a lineman to pay his way through college. In the late 1950’s he moved to Tampa, Florida for a residency in general medicine then completed a residency in Anesthesiology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. After he returned to Louisville he decided Orthopedics was the specialty he wanted to pursue. Later the partnership of Ford, Fadel and Jacob was formed, specializing in Orthopedics at St. Mary’s and Elizabeth Hospital. He was a very well respected physician and orthopedic surgeon for close to 40 years. Some of his patients included many jockeys at Churchill Downs and Col. Harland Sanders.
Woody was never idle and wanted to fill every day with something meaningful. He was always looking for a project. The bigger and more challenging, the better. He had a strong, passionate gift for woodworking. His workshop resembled that of a professional furniture making business. He had every tool for every job. He frequently crafted shelves, gun cabinets, and medical exam tables. Every project he took on was done with precision and made to last. He rebuilt an elaborate curving 100 year old staircase in his daughter and son-in-law’s home. He was masterful at installing flooring made with exotic woods. He made beautiful jewelry boxes with names engraved for his five granddaughters. He had a fondness for restoring dilapidated furniture others would have given up on. Woody was an avid golfer, a sports enthusiast who could remember minute details and statistics of pro and college games from decades ago. He also enjoyed outings on his houseboat on the Ohio River.
He is preceded in death by his parents Norwood K. Ford Sr., Clara M. Ford & sister Elizabeth “Anne” Ford.
He is survived by his children, Laura Barnett (Tim) of Bloomfield, David Ford (Christina) of Georgetown, and Michael Ford (Erin) of Elizabethtown. Granddaughters Rachel and Elizabeth Barnett, Madeline, Olivia and Alyson Ford also survive him.
The family would like to acknowledge the very professional and compassionate care shown to Dr. Ford by his caregivers the last few months.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 10, 2022 from 2-7pm at Arch L.Heady Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road, Louisville. The funeral service will be Monday, April 11, 2022 at 12pm in the Sanctuary of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2800 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville where Dr. Ford was a member for over 50 years.
