

2022. He was born in Louisville on March 2, 1930.
Richard died peacefully at his beloved home in Prospect, Kentucky surrounded by family. He
fiercely loved his family and friends and was loved back even more. One of his greatest joys was
relishing the glorious natural beauty of his surroundings – anywhere he traveled, but particularly
at his home and gardens on Wolf Pen.
Richard was a nationally recognized trial lawyer and renowned Kentucky attorney. He was a
member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and the Supreme Court of
Kentucky, among others. He served in the U.S. Army and the Army’s Judge Advocate General’s
Corps. He practiced law for more than 50 years.
Richard graduated from the University of Louisville in 1952 and the University of Louisville
Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1954. He was a leading member of the Phi Kappa Tau
fraternity. He also played baseball for the Cardinals and remained a huge fan of the Louisville
Cardinal sports teams.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Theodore and May Katherine Schneiter
Trautwein; and siblings Robert T. and James R. Trautwein.
Richard is survived by his adoring and devoted wife, Doris Bouse Trautwein, Louisville. Richard
was previously married to Carol Hammon-Pyle, deceased, Louisville.
Richard is also survived by five loving children, Robert Trautwein, Louisville; Todd Trautwein
(Jane Frances, M.D.), Lexington, Kentucky; Robin Bouse Titzler (Henry), San Luis Obispo,
California; Neil Trautwein (Janet), Louisville; and Melinda Caballes James (Robert), Phoenix,
Arizona; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
daughter Becky Dalton (David), Charleston, South Carolina.
Richard’s memorial service will be held at 11:00am March 26 at Springdale Presbyterian
Church, 7812 Brownsboro Road, Louisville. A reception will follow the service. The burial service will be held at 11:00am April 9
at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville.
