Ruth Cole Herring

Born Ruth Virginia Cole on the 22nd of September, 1919 in Corydon, Kentucky to parents John and Nannie Cole, Ruth came to Louisville in the 1940s and made her home there for over 50 years. Married to Alvin Herring Jr. in 1953, Ruth began a successful career in nursing and helped to integrate local hospitals and health care facilities. Ruth took great pride in her profession and was highly regarded by hospital administrators, patients and family members for her professionalism and her compassion. She received a commendation for her service from the First Lady, Michelle Obama on her 95th birthday.

Ruth retired from nursing after nearly 40 years of practice in 1990. In retirement she devoted her time to her family, her grandchildren and her hobbies - reading and shopping.

Ruth is survived by a sister, Mary Katherine McDowell of Los Angeles, California, three children Cassandra Herring of Baltimore, Maryland, Alvin Bruce Herring of Battle Creek, Michigan and David Herring of Louisville, Kentucky, daughter-in-law, Deborah, grandsons Brandon and Ryan and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4:00pm-6:00pm on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Evergreen Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday at 12:00pm at the funeral home.
