

John Thomas Spaugh known to his family and friends as Tommie passed away on 12 February 2017. The lifetime resident of Louisville, KY was born 12 January 1930 son of George F and Mary E (Shelton) Spaugh. He graduated from Jeffersontown High School in 1948 and immediately joined the United States Navy where he served until 1953. After exploring several occupations he made his lifelong career on the L&N Railroad where he retired in 1993. Second only to family, was his true passion in life; stock car racing. He won the first race he ever entered in 1951 at Jefferson County Armory driving a Crosley. That was it; he was "hooked" on the sport forever! Of his over 30 trophies, there were two high points; first when he won the 50 Lap Tri-State Figure 8 Championship stock car race at Fairgrounds Motor Speedway in 1965. And second, in the same year he won the points Championship Figure 8 Division at the Sports Drome in Jeffersonville, IN. He participated in the sport all over the eastern United States including ARCA and ASA races. In service to his community, Tommie was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Freemasons for over 50 years and a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32 Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. There will be a Masonic funeral service at 6:30 pm Wednesday evening 15 February which is open to all friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his wife Bonnie of 53 years, brother Frank L. Spaugh and granddaughter Kristen Priddy. He is survived by his sister, Bertha Spaugh Borresen, daughters Helen M. Bardell (Mark), Martha Priddy Barrett (Larry) and Geraldine D Lohuis (Jim); son Tom Priddy (Terri); granddaughters Amanda Nelson and Loren Priddy; nieces Mary Hornek (Joe), Sarah S Sharp (Jim), Linda Mahanay, Loretta Welch, and Lynette Jackson (Stuart).
Visitation will be at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd. on Wednesday 15 February 2017 from 3-8 PM. A celebration of Tommie's life will be conducted at 2 pm on Thursday 16 February 2017 with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Additional visitation will be available that morning after 9 am. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hosparus Inpatient out of respect for their care of Tommie and Bonnie.
