Bernard had a rough start on life as an orphan, losing his father at age 5 and his mother at age 12. Despite the adversity he had faced through his adolescence, he was a very warm and loving man who helped people every chance he got. From a young age, Bernard would turn his pain into passion for serving his country. Bernard would attend Howe Military Academy, where his rifle team would become the Indiana State Champions. Upon graduating from Howe, he would join the US Air Force as a military policeman where he would qualify as an expert on several different firearms and would spend his time guarding flight lines, crash sites and other sensitive areas in Turkey and the Philippines.
Not long after returning to his home state of Michigan—the Motor City and the birthplace of Motown—Bernard met the love of his life, Karen Mundy. Their first date would last 14 days and they were inseparable for 17 years. Together, they would enjoy tearing up dance floors, riding roller coasters at theme parks, and everything in between. They got married not long after meeting and would then have three children that Bernard would eventually raise as a single father in Colorado.
Despite his distinction as a marksman, Bernard was an avid knife collector. He spent most of his free time researching, polishing, sharpening, and handling knives. More times than not, Bernard would be working on a knife during a conversation. He also had a big love for animals, and would go on to rescue and care for all sorts of animals throughout his life. Bernard enjoyed watching alien and conspiracy videos, as well as discussing conspiracy theories with friends and families.
He was a very generous man who loved taking care of people by giving them knives, coins and cooking for them. He ensured that everyone who left his home would leave with a full stomach, something in their pocket, and in better condition than they arrived in. He was a homebody and a family man who loved being with and taking care of his kids.
Having been a very charismatic and charming man, he made friends everywhere he went, through all walks of life. He was also a big visionary, who never clouded his children or friends with things such as "odds" or "playing it safe". He believed that life was meant to be lived happily and freely, and that as long as you were following your heart and staying true to yourself, you would never fail.
As a father, Bernard would make all of the time in the world for his three children. They knew they could come to him with absolutely anything, and they all admired his ability to help them solve absolutely any hardship they faced. He moved mountains and seas for his three children, and split anything he had to offer them amongst the three of them from the day they came into his life. Their favorite superhero and most beloved guardian angel will forever be their loving bald man from Detroit, B-Man.
Bernard’s legacy lives on with his three children and two furry children: Travis Polhamus (Travie), Trevor Polhamus (Deanie), Tara Polhamus (Rita Raina), Miss Kitty Polhamus and Kiki Polhamus.
