John Larry Duncan, Sr., was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, November 13th, 1945, to Norma Lorene Monger Duncan and Maurice Franklin Duncan. He left this world on the afternoon of February 28th, 2025, surrounded by the love of all who would miss him, and of all of those who had gone before him, at the Pathways Hospice Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was 79 years old. John was, and remains, a beloved husband, father, friend, papaw, and great-grandpa.
There will be a memorial service at Allnutt Funeral Chapel in Loveland, CO, on Wednesday, March 12th, at 2:00 pm, with a small reception to follow. Viewing will be March 11th, from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at the Allnutt Chapel, as well.
John married Constance Elaine Ingram September 4th, 1970, in Tulsa. She was the love of his life, and they shared five children, and almost 55 years of marriage together, for most of which they lived right here, in Loveland, Colorado.
John loved Colorado, but was a proud Okie, growing up in Pawhuska, and known for his stories and sayings that left us all laughing. He grew up an outdoorsman in Oklahoma, and took that lifestyle with him to Colorado when he moved the family up here first in 1972, and then again, and permanently, in 1981. John raised his children with a love of the Rocky Mountains, camping, hunting, safe and effective firearm use, Fords, Broncos football, drag-racing, and off-roading. He was committed to supporting the Second Amendment both politically and through his daily life. John grew up attending church with his family in Pawhuska and Tulsa. He was a member of a few local churches, participating as a church usher at Resurrection Fellowship in Loveland in the 80s, and most recently attending Timberline Church in Fort Collins. He trusted that the Lord would lead him out of this life the same way He had led him through it, with grace and love.
John was a talented and respected welder, contributing to the construction of many pipelines and coal-burning power plants throughout Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico, during the 70s and 80s. After working for 5 years building the Rawhide Power Station north of Fort Collins, he began his career with Platte River Power Authority and continued working in the maintenance crews of Rawhide Power Station until his retirement in 2007. John and Connie moved from Loveland to Ault, CO, in 2006, where their home became the center of many family get-togethers. Dad continued to pursue hunting as his favorite pastime, bringing home squirrels, rabbits, pronghorn, wild pig and a white tail buck from a trip to Texas, and lots of mule deer and elk through the years, including the six point bull he’d dreamed of finding, in 1986. After years of putting in for a moose license, John was given the opportunity to go moose hunting in 2019, and he was finally able to bring home his bull moose. Bagging “Moosey” was to be his final adventure in hunting, as his declining health prevented him from hunting again.
John is survived by his loving wife, Constance Elaine Duncan; his children: Stephanie Shealy, John Larry Duncan, Jr, Sarah Duncan Purcell, and John Levi Duncan; ten wonderful grandchildren; and four adorable great-grandchildren, all of Colorado; his sisters-in-law Cheryl Ingram Griffith (Doug) of Leander, TX, Crystal Ingram Phillips (John) of Arlington, VA, and D’Jeanne Newberry Duncan (Rick) of Cushing, OK; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Dale Stafford; his beloved little brother, William J. “Billy Joe” Duncan; his daughter, Sharon Abagail Duncan; all of his aunts and uncles, some of his cousins, and too many dear friends.
Seventy-nine years may be and sound like a lifetime to many, but there was never going to be enough time with John for those of us he left behind.
