Mike was born on August 6, 1936, to Ethel and John Cain in their home in Ayr, Nebraska. According to his baby book, Mike laughed for the first time at 1 month old. Hard to believe – unless you knew him.
Humor and laughter marked Mike’s life, who grinned, chuckled and cracked jokes almost to the end, even when Alzheimer’s had stolen his ability to walk or recognize old friends – of which Mike had many.
Kind, good-natured and highly sociable, people were drawn to Mike, who spent much of his life selling and working on cars, his true love second only to his wife of 67 years.
Mike married Alice Nadine Thompson on July 6, 1958, not long after he raced a buddy to ask her for a date. He won. Just months later, he and “Deanie” (as only Mike called her) were married in Fort Collins, where they both graduated from Fort Collins High School.
The two made Fort Collins their home, raising three children. Mike retired from Markley Motors after a successful 31-year career so that he could follow his dream of buying and running his own car lot – Cain’s Cruisers – before officially retiring to his own garage.
Grease-stained hands and coveralls were a hallmark of Mike’s, who spent most of his spare time in his garage, working on cars and refurbishing antique and classic automobiles.
He and Nadine were lifelong members of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Antique Auto Club and enjoyed four-wheeling trips in the Rocky Mountains, exploring ghost towns.
Mike is survived by Nadine and his children: Michael Cain of Fort Collins; Debra Melani (Chris) of Lyons; and Jared Cain (Kearston) of Windsor.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Annalisa Cain of Windsor; Jordan Melani (Amber) of Loveland; Ethan Melani of Lyons; Trysten Cain (Shaina) of Los Angeles; McCaslin Cain (Jazzy) of Windsor; and Skyler Cain of Windsor; and great grandchildren, Jaxson and McKenna Cain of Windsor.
A memorial service for Mike will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Allnutt Funeral Service, 2100 North Lincoln Avenue, Loveland, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Mike's name to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
