He was raised and educated in Red Bank. He graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa and married Esther A. Peters in 1951. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. He taught high school math and science in Iowa and Illinois. He received his Doctorate from the University of Illinois. He served on the faculty at Barron County campus of Stout State University in Wisconsin, the Department of Education at the University of Illinois and the University of Dubuque in Iowa (’70-’92) where he was a Department and Division Chairman. He retired in 1992 and moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista where he was an Elder and a Deacon and served on numerous committees. He enjoyed golf, bridge, exercising at Branchwood, hiking with the Hills ‘n Dales Hikers Club and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 62 years, Esther A. Wellner, as well as three sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol J. Friedmann and husband Stanley Friedmann of Luxemburg, Iowa; Julie A. Monroe and husband Robert Monroe of Loveland, Colorado; five grandsons and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Patricia Taylor of Rexford, Montana.
