Died peacefully on April 6, 2022. His family and loved ones were with him. He had battled cancer and Parkinson’s Disease for several years prior to his death.
Born in Mansfield, Texas on August 20, 1932
Preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Virginia Rose Mahaley Thompson, infant son Glenn Todge Thompson, mother Ethel Farr Thompson, father Henry Grady Thompson, sister Ethel Belle Adkins, and brother Grady Odell Thompson.
Survived by his sister Patsy Thompson, his children Mahaley Odell Thompson (Shannon), Eva-Marie Thompson-Lavigne (Chris Fry), and Andrew Adam Thompson (Jeanna), his grandsons Thomas Lavigne (Amy) and Alexander Dudley Thompson, great grandson Levi Mahaley Lavigne, and his life partner Digi Fry.
Mr. Thompson served in the U.S. Army and the Navy.
He was a Professor of architecture and urban design at Texas Tech University College of Architecture from 1955, and continued to participate as a guest critic until recently.
He served as the first Dean of the College of Architecture when it was established in 1986.
The passion he had for teaching inspired multiple generations of architects who have practiced across the globe.
Throughout his life he had a uniquely wide-eyed wanderlust, loving to get lost knowing that he would discover amazing things to share with others down the road. That fearless, innocent need to discover and share rubbed off on all he encountered along his journey.
We will miss him profoundly, but through his example, we are inspired to carry on with our own journeys with our eyes wide open.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Mahaley Thompson endowed scholarship in the College of Architecture Texas Tech University.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12th, at 3:00 p.m. at the Carillon Point Plaza Fireside Lounge.
