Born on January 28, 1944, in Long Beach, New York, Art lived a life rooted in service, faith, and devotion to his family and country. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964 during the Vietnam War, holding the rank of Fireman (FN) aboard the USS Eugene A. Greene. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Following his military service, Art continued his lifelong commitment to public service as a police officer. His law enforcement career began in 1966 and spanned three decades, serving with the Long Beach Police Department, Thornton Police Department, and concluding his career with honor in Log Lane, Colorado.
Art was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughters Michelle Vermilye-Swallows (and her husband Jamie Swallows), Allison McNa, and Josie Montoya (and her husband Benjamin Montoya); his son John Adams; twelve grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Outside of work, Art was deeply grounded in his faith and was a longtime member of Saint Christopher’s Episcopal Church. He found peace and purpose in the outdoors and cherished time spent fishing, hunting, and camping with his loved ones.
Art’s legacy of strength, integrity, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A full military service will be held next summer at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Art’s name to the National Fraternal Order of Police Foundation in support of fallen officers and their families.
