Beverly was born on January 10, 1935, in Wink, Texas, the second child of Almajo and G.W. Hutcheson. She attended elementary school in Monument, New Mexico, and Whiteface and Sundown, Texas, and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1950. Beverly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Texas Tech, with the intention of becoming a teacher.
While working for the Lubbock Hubbers baseball organization in the summer of 1954, Beverly met a tall, handsome pitcher named George McDuff, who would turn out to be the one and only love of her life. Beverly and George were married in November of 1954 and settled in Lubbock. Beverly fulfilled her plans to become an educator, teaching kindergarten at St. Christopher’s Episcopal School from 1963 to 1970. Beverly and George welcomed their son Glen in 1956 and daughter Karen in 1970.
After teaching, Beverly turned her interest and energy to volunteer work in the Lubbock community. She served on the boards of the Lubbock Women’s Club, Lubbock Symphony Guild, YWCA of Lubbock, and Sherick Memorial Home. She joined friends old and new in the Lubbock Study Club and PEO (Chapter DP). Beverly was a lifetime member of the Texas PTA, earning that honor by working countless hours on parties, projects, and fundraisers alongside her best friend, Linda Lambeth.
A love of travel took Beverly and George all over the world, but the trips they loved most were the ones they took to watch the Texas Tech baseball team. They joined fellow fans, who became lifelong friends, and followed the Red Raiders to away games, the Big 12 Tournament, and the College World Series in Omaha twice!
Beverly strived to stay active in her later years, with welcomed help from her granddaughter Macy. From nighttime trips to Braum’s, walks on the beach in the Bahamas, and even a stroll down Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Beverly and Macy were always up for an adventure! Anyone who knew her, knew that Beverly’s favorite role was “Granny.”
Family who remembers and honors Beverly include her daughter Karen McDuff Havins and granddaughter Macy Hamel of Lubbock, her son Glen McDuff and wife Christine of Los Alamos, New Mexico, her granddaughter Haley Killip, husband Josh and great granddaughter Teyla of Pine, Colorado.
Beverly is preceded in death by her husband George, her brother Choc Hutcheson, her sister-in-law Virginia Hutcheson, and her son-in-law Mark Havins.
Beverly’s family gives heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Debbie Reeves, a special caregiver who became a friend, and to the caregivers and staff at CareCo and Primrose Retirement Community for the loving care they gave Beverly.
Beverly’s life well-lived will be celebrated on May 7 and 8.
