She was born on October 4th, 1929.
Doris was one of three children of Mr. and Mrs. Emory E. Elkins of Tulia, Texas. Doris grew up on the farm, and learned at a very early age the beauty of hard work, and service to others. Doris graduated with a Masters Degree in Education from Texas Tech in 1958, and passionately taught Home Economics for decades to come to students at Monterey High School in Lubbock Texas.
Also in 1958, after meeting at College Avenue Baptist Church in Lubbock, and a brief courtship, Doris wed Harry D. Dixon on November 26th of that year. Their love story lasted over 50 years until our father was called home in March of 2012.
Throughout her life, our mother loved to pour into others. She served in the children’s nursery for many years at College Avenue/University Baptist Church. On many occasions, she also volunteered at the hospital to rock the newborn babies, such was her love of children.
She also taught her talents of sewing and quilting to many single mothers as part of her ministry of service while at the church. And during retirement, you could find Doris at the local Dillard’s where she demonstrated the newest gadgets to help you in the kitchen.
In addition to her love of cooking and teaching others the joys of homemaking, Doris loved the outdoors, to garden, and entertain. Serving others was just an extension of how she lovingly served her family and friends so well.
Annual Summer trips to Colorado, many times with children from both the Elkins and Dixon’s, were ways our mother brought together both sides of the family. And for years and years on Friday nights, our home was an open invitation for our parent’s friends from across many decades to come over and play “84” and fellowship. Her home was a beautiful example of her heart – open, inviting, joyful, full of laughter and life’s simple pleasures.
She lived life other’s-focused and with open hands to give what she had, and love unconditionally to all she touched. Even in her final years, that was her heart. She spent these last years, loving and encouraging all she came in contact with at the Discovery Village memory care unit, telling every one “I love you”, counting her blessings, and being a shining light to both residents and to the staff that cared for her. To many, she has been the hands and feet of Jesus, and more so in action than just words.
She is survived by her son Douglas Dixon (57) and granddaughters Ashley Chaumont (31) and Morgan Dixon (22) of Roundrock Texas, and son David Dixon (55) and his wife Alyssa, and grandsons’ Brett (22), Ryan (21) and Joshua (16) of Keller Texas.
Doris Dixon’s celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept 12th at Resthaven Funeral Home 5740 w 19th St. Lubbock, TX 79407, with a memorial service beginning at 1:00 PM, and burial at 2:00 PM, followed by a reception for the family.
