Dorothy Womack Shaw passed away on June 17, 2024. God said, “I need someone with arms strong enough to keep up with the farmer yet gentle enough to cuddle a newborn baby. Someone to run for parts; help in the fields, and cook a meal from the vegetables she grew in the garden. Someone when the day is done, to look into the farmer’s eyes, and tell him ‘I love you and the life we’ve built’. So, God made a farmer’s wife.”
A farmer’s wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Dorothy cherished her family completely and their life on the farm. She was born on February 6, 1934, in Lubbock, Texas, the eldest daughter of Jim and Fay Womack. Dorothy and her younger sister, Martha grew up with a strong Christian faith. She was a lifetime member of Hurlwood Baptist Church. It was no surprise when she married her Frendship High School sweetheart, Albert “Tootie” Shaw upon their graduation in 1951. When he returned from the Korean War, they farmed land west of Lubbock. She worked at Daniel’s Gin, and Kershner’s Nursery, and was employed by the Department of Ophthalmology at Texas Tech University for over 25 years while together they raised their two sons, Jim and Roque on the farm.
She is preceded in death by her parents Jim and Fay Womack and her husband, Albert “Tootie” Shaw. She is survived by her sister, Martha Junca of Metairie, Louisiana; sons, Jim Shaw (Sharon) and Roque Shaw (Frances) both of Lubbock; grandchildren, Ben Shaw (Kelsi) of Amarillo, Kasey Shaw Salyer (Trent) of Arlington, Alexander Shaw and Daniel Shaw both of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Shaw and Kathryn Shaw of Amarillo.
The family would like to thank the entire staffs of Fountain Hills Assisted Living and Memory Care and Hospice of Lubbock (Cassandra RN, Cheryl, and Alisa). Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Visitation will be on Thursday June 20, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home. Services will be held in the Abbey Chapel at Resthaven Funeral Home on June 21, 2024 at 10:00 am with interment to follow.
