Flora Esther Mears

Flora Esther Mears, age 101, passed away Tuesday June 16, 2015 in Lubbock. She was born May 22, 1914 in Ninnekah, OK to George and Nora Jelks. She graduated from Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK. Flora married H. C. Mears December 24, 1937.

Flora taught choir and English in high school and completed her teaching career on the elementary level. She taught in Oklahoma and New Mexico and at Stewart and Bowie Elementary here in Lubbock. Flora was a talented musician, playing the piano and organ and wrote musicals for her elementary classes.

She enjoyed crafting, cooking and being with her grandchildren. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Roy Mears and his wife Kathy of Lubbock; daughter, Nornita Willmon and husband Wayne of Midlothian, TX; grandchildren, Greg Tapp and wife Diana of Cleveland, TX, Kendall Tapp and wife Jennifer of Plano, TX, Kristen Alpert and husband Stewart of Sunnyvale, CA, Matthew Mears and wife Kathy of Tallahassee, FL, Karri Carter and husband Kenny of Melissa, TX, Esther Slavens and husband Mark of Plano, TX, Robert Mears and wife Lisa of Lubbock, Stephen Mears of Ft Worth, Michael Mears and wife Alana of Euless, TX, Kelly Eldridge and husband Nathan of Tomball,TX and Kimberly Mears of Lubbock; 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild on the way.
