He was a football player at Cameron University and University of New Mexico. George married his college sweetheart, Ruth Ann Sims, in 1941 and has always said that it was the best moment of his life. He joined the US Army in 1942 and served during WWII in the Philippines and Australia. He continued his career in education as a coach and school administrator. George was a deacon in various Baptist churches throughout the years, and most recently a deacon and member at Bacon Heights Baptist Church.
George is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ruth Hughes; daughter, Sherry (Jerry) Rigdon; grandson, Ryan (Jen) Rigdon and twin great-grandsons, Ben and Miles Rigdon. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, LeRoy Hughes; and sister, Jewel Gilpin.
