Born in San Angelo, Texas to Virginia and Paul Ashby, Gloria moved with her family to Lubbock in 1960 where they became charter members of Oakwood Baptist Church. She graduated from Monterey High School and Texas Tech, where she was a proud member of the Phi Mu sorority. Throughout her life she remained a devoted Red Raider, whether she was traveling through Europe or working in Dallas.
In 1982, Gloria married Donnie Baker. They were blessed with two children, Ginnie and Lance, who were the greatest joys of her life. Gloria was an involved and loving mother who encouraged her children to pursue their dreams and achieve their personal best. She remained devoted to her five grandchildren and treasured every moment spent supporting their activities.
Gloria is remembered as a loyal and caring friend who always had time for others. Beautiful on the inside and out, she could light up a room with her infectious smile and warm, contagious laugh. Energetic, dependable, creative and artistic. Gloria shared her many talents generously with her friends, family, and community.
She honed her creative skills for many years as the publisher of “Homes and Land Magazine of West Texas.” She worked for many years at Cokesbury Christian Bookstore and later retired at Lubbock’s First United Methodist Church as the administrative assistant for Pastor Shera Atkinson. During this time, Gloria served her community through LISD, Southwest Little League, and American Cancer Society. She especially loved chairing the annual children’s party for kids with cancer.
Gloria’s finest moments were spent with children, her own and so many others whose lives she touched.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ginnie Baker of Dallas, TX and Lance (Kyleen) Baker of Stephenville, TX, her grandchildren Grayson and Gavin Baker and Maci, Hadley, and Stella Cheek; her brothers John Paul “Butch” (Dianne) Ashby of Scottsdale, AZ, and Gary (Terri) Ashby of Lubbock. Gloria’s many nieces and nephews will remember her fondly, as will her faithful weenie dog, Gabby.
A celebration of Gloria’s life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd St., Lubbock, TX 79424. The family encourages guests to wear bright, fun colors or pops of color to honor Gloria’s vibrant and joyful spirit.
