Imogene was born on April 4, 1922 in Memphis, Texas to Isaac Eugene and Nancy Vernah Auten. She was the youngest of three children, having two older brothers. The Autens moved to Seminole when Imogene was only one year old; raising their children on a ranch just outside of town. Imogene spent many hours riding horses bareback, during which she broke her collarbone twice. Churning butter aided in her recovery. She also gave great care to her many cats on the ranch.
Imogene graduated from Seminole High School, being active in basketball, softball, and cheerleading. After graduation, she married the love of her life, Horace Ira Jones on December 22, 1939. Horace and Imogene spent the next years in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi while Horace worked as a seismograph surveyor. They returned to Seminole to live and raise their children, Milton and Kala and there they spent their remaining years together. They were members of the Avenue B Church of Christ in Seminole. Imogene worshipped there from 1947 to 1991. When she moved to Lubbock, she worshipped with the Kings Ridge Church of Christ.
As a Christian, Imogene enjoyed teaching Bible class, learning and teaching memory verses, visiting and cooking for the sick and helping others in any ways she could. She was especially passionate about sharing the truth of the Bible with other people.
Imogene worked as executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Seminole for 25 years. She worked with the American Cancer Society for many years, as well as many other organizations. During this time she was named “Citizen of the Year”. She loved playing golf at the Gaines County Golf Course; entering in many Jack and Jill tournaments. She was always ready to play games with the family and friends, especially 42.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Horace; son Milton; and two brothers John D. and Jack. She is survived by her daughter Kala Shropshire and husband Jack; granddaughter Leslie Leishman and husband Graham; grandson Andreas Jones and wife Judy; grandson Frank Jones; daughter in law Eva Jones; and 5 great grandchildren.
Faithful Christian, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, loyal, honest, generous, fun-loving, adventuresome, dependable, and a great sense of humor.
“…but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
Kala and Jack would like to thank the incredible, kind hearted staff at Library of Legacies in Slaton for the generous, sympathetic, efficient and loving care that was constantly given and shown to our mother during her stay there.
