

Jack Markham, 102, passed away peacefully in his residence at Windsong on September 21, 2015. He was born November 26, 1912, to C.B. and Nora Markham in Cedron Creek, Texas. He was one of seven children. The family moved by wagon to Tatum, New Mexico, when he was quite young. His father was in the ranching business and Jack followed him with a love of ranching.
In his 20’s he worked as an oil and gas landman and it was in his office in Lubbock in 1937 that he met Mary Boone. They married later in 1937. Together they had two children. Mary preceded him in death in 2005.
Jack became very involved in Republican politics serving as County Chairman for John Tower, Goldwater, Nixon, Phil Graham, and Eisenhower. He served twice as County Chairman for Ronald Reagan and was a member of the Electoral College in 1980 that elected Reagan as President. He was named Mr. Republican in 1984.
Mr. Markham was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Downtown Bible Class. He served as President of the Downtown Bible Class and the Lubbock Country Club. He was a charter member of the Downtown Bible Class. He also served on the board of Howard Payne University.
His passions in life were many: golf (a hole-in-one on his 97th birthday), ranching, politics, and the Downtown Bible Class. Jack’s greatest passion was for his family.
Survivors include his daughter Manon McMullen and husband Neil; son Rod Markham and wife Marianna; six grandchildren: Laine Trammel and husband Dustin, Randall Markham, Greg McMullen and wife Cindy, Patti Elliott and husband Vince, Vic McMullen and wife Stephanie, and Mark McMullen and wife Lanette; twelve great-grandchildren, and his wonderful caregiver, Gabey Sanchez and husband Kenny, and all of their family.
