James M. Broome—known lovingly as Jim, Coach Broome, Daddy, and OP—passed peacefully on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after an extended illness. He left this world just as he lived in it, surrounded by love, after a short visit with family.
Born on December 7, 1942, in Haifa, Palestine, Jim’s life journey took him from there to England and eventually to Lubbock, Texas, the place he would call home and where he planted deep roots. A little mischievous in his younger school days, Jim grew into a man whose life was defined by service, kindness, and connection. He became a much-beloved teacher, coach, counselor, and administrator in Lubbock ISD—someone who never met a stranger and never hesitated to help a student, colleague, or friend in need.
Jim was generous to a fault and endlessly proud of his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Diane, with whom he shared 42 years of marriage. He was the proud father of three daughters: Debbie Crites (Ed), Amy Stephens (Shawn), and Kim Cantu (Robert). His greatest joy was being OP to his grandchildren: Allison Crites, Micaela Crites, Emily Crites, Jackson Stephens, Holden Stephens, Rachel Cantu, Chloe Cantu, and Ella Cantu.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—fishing, watching his children and grandchildren grow, loving on his pups, enjoying a good cookie, and settling in to watch game shows, especially Jeopardy! Whether answering questions from his chair or cheering when he beat the contestants, those moments brought him genuine joy.
Jim is also survived by his mother-in-law, BJ Bownds; his brother-in-law, David Bownds; and his siblings, Mark Broome and Mary Michaud. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Anna Broome, and his brother, John Broome.
Services will be held Friday, February 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., with a reception following at Lake Ridge Chapel.
