

He was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Jessie Johns and Myrtle Dean Johns. He was a graduate of Anton High School in 1953 before attending the Texas Department of Public Safety Academy.
James worked as a Texas State Trooper in Crosbyton and Brownfield for 15 years before moving to Tucson AZ. He worked for Duval Corporation as a copper-mine foreman and moved back to Lubbock in 1985 where he worked as a security officer at Methodist /Covenant Hospital until his retirement. He was a member of Redbud Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Floyd Glasscock, wife Bettye, sister Mary Ann Royall, and granddaughter Hannah Soucy. He is survived by children Angelia (Danny) of Hamilton, Jamie (Scott) of Edmund OK, Kelly (Michael) of Palm Springs CA, and Tamara (Brent) of Lubbock. He had 7 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
