Juanita Harbert Jenkins of Sundown, Texas. He was 79 years old. He grew up in small communities in west Texas and Arizona and graduated from Spur High School. He went on to work his way through four years at Texas Tech University, majoring in business administration.
On June 8, 1978, he married the love of his life, Lynnda Parker Lokey. Together they united their beloved children, Kristie Franklin (Bill) and Kasie Jenkins (Robin), and Lance Lokey in a life of love, commitment and fun in a marriage that thrived for almost 48 years. Their love joyfully expanded over the years to welcome grandchildren Campbell and John Franklin, children of Kristie and Bill, and Kaleb and Charley Ann McNeese, children of Kasie. Papa JJ treasured the time and fun he spent with every one of them, and he was not above teasing them or telling tall tales, but he imparted his wisdom and common sense in many of his stories. He was known for his sense of humor, sometimes with a friendly little jab included, but he saw funny things that many people missed.
Jarrell spent his professional life as a manufacturer’s representative for several companies, most notably 21 years with Broyhill Furniture Industries of Lenoir, North Carolina. His customers were his friends, and he was respected for his strong work ethic, reliability and relationships he built along the way.
He was an all-sports player in high school, and graduated as the quarterback of Spur’s football team after holding that position in Flagstaff, Arizona. He had a number of ribbons in track and played basketball, but his competitiveness resulted in expulsion from several games, leading his Dad to stop attending basketball games. He later loved playing golf with his friends for many years and he and brother Jim won their flight in several tournaments. He and Lynnda loved the outdoors and hiked across the lower half of the lower 48, from the Outer Banks and mountains of western North Carolina to northern Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and California. They reveled in spending time in many of God’s wondrous creations and had years of enjoyment from hiking, snow skiing, dancing and attending Texas Tech football and basketball games.
He is survived by his wife Lynnda, children and spouses, grandchildren and brother Jim Jenkins (Toni) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded by his parents and his sister Jana Jenkins.
A celebration of Jarrell’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m. at LakeRidge Global Methodist Church, 4701 82nd Street in Lubbock, in the chapel. It is on the west central side. Follow the sidewalks to the entrance doors into the main building. Inurnment will follow in the columbarium in the adjoining Prayer Garden, concluded by a visitation in the Prayer Garden.
