

John R. Mattingly was born November 29, 1942 in St. Francis, Kentucky to John M and Catherine L. Mattingly both of Kentucky. His friends and family knew him as “Bob”. In the early hours of May 26, 2019, Bob crossed to his new pain free life.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, Thursday, May 20, 2019 at Resthaven Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 5740 19th Street, Lubbock, Texas 79407. Graveside services will follow at Resthaven Cemetery at 2:00pm. Family members will officiate the services. Bob was of the Catholic faith. Four of his brothers: Jim, Mike, Joe, and Bill, a long-time friend Smitty and a step grandson Blake will serve as Pall bearers. Arrangements are made through the special efforts of Bill Myers of Myes and Smith Funeral Home in Big Springs, Texas and Resthaven Memorial Park and Cemetery in Lubbock, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Lola Mattingly and four daughters and three son-in-laws: Judy (Ray) Laurie (Gary) and Paula (Brad) and Bobbie. Bob was the eldest of 14 brothers and sisters and is survived by: Tom (Charlotte), Jim (Carolyn), Nita (Bob), Ann (Bill), Steve (Jan), Faye, John (Debbie), Gerard (Andie), Bill (Karen), Mike (Jackie), Marie (Earle), Jeannie (Bill), and Joe as well as a host of nephews, nieces, grandchildren an in-laws.
Bob obtained his GED from Loretto High School, Loretto, Kentucky. He joined the U.S> Navy in November of 1959 proudly serving his country in the Viet Nam era aboard the USS Preble until his honorable discharge in November of 1963. Bob was a skilled brick mason for 40 years. As his family can attest, he loved camping and fishing and in his later years enjoyed riding his Harley around the Texas Plains. He and his Harley rode in the Patriot Guard to shield family members from harassment by ill intended protestors at graveside services like this, within the Lubbock area. Bob loved their two dogs Beau and Zoya.
Your family and friends will always treasure your memory, Bob Mattingly! No one can ever take that away from us. Till Memory fades and life departs, you will live forever in our hearts. We love and miss you but will see you in all our memories.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and/or the Vietnam Veterans Association in lieu of flowers. The families of Bob and the families of Lola Mattingly wish to extend our sincere thanks to the EMS and Fire Department staffs who attended our loved one at home and in route to the hospital and to Dr. Haider and the awesome, caring ER staff of Covenant hospital who worked tirelessly and gave their best efforts for the best care for our Bob. We will always remember your kindness to the family as well.
