Joyce Arterburn

She is survived by Diana & Kelby Mullins (Whitney, Hailey + Kyle); David & Lori Arterburn (Dayton, Griffin + MC, & Halston); and Don & LouAnna Arterburn (Isaac, Andy, & Zane). She had two brothers: Preston Davis survived by Mimi (Kevin & Amy) and Wayne Davis survived by Jayne (Beth & Christie).

Her parents Earl and Inabell were educators at a time when teachers and principals functioned as social workers, nurses, and family therapists. Mrs. Art taught for over 40 years (37 at Texas Tech) and won outstanding teaching awards while mentoring and guiding thousands of students through college and beyond.

She graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Tech where she excelled in Speech, Education, and club volleyball. Opportunities for women to compete in college athletics would become a passion as she started teaching, first in Denver Colorado and then back at Texas Tech. As the founding sponsor of the spirit organization “High Riders” at Tech, she inspired many people to invest in and care about women’s athletics. Many High Rider Alums have stayed in contact with her and visited her over the last 20 years since she retired from Tech. In a special recognition, she will be celebrated at the Lady Raider basketball game on Saturday January 6th at 2:00pm.

Mom and Dad taught Sunday School classes for students at First Baptist Church for over 50 years. She believed in the power of prayer and often lifted people up through her care and concern. She adored her 8 grandchildren and her 3 great-grandchildren (Cohen, Jude, & Ella) and used her superpowers of empathy and humor to connect with family and students of all ages. She inspired all of us to know God in a personal and meaningful way. She would often leave a gathering by reminding us “Please don’t forget that I love you.”

You are invited to celebrate and honor Joyce's life at First Baptist Church with a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at 2pm.
