Mell Alice Halford was born on September 25, 1933 in Wolfe City, Texas, and passed away at the age of 91 on October 3, 2024. She was a loving wife to Kesley Garland (KG) Halford, and a wonderful mother to Paula Halford Nichols, Dennis Halford, and Terry Halford. She was also a cherished sister and beloved friend.
Mell worked for many, many years managing Furr’s Cafeteria. She was a hard worker and cared very much about quality. When she retired from Furr’s, she spent her time doting on her grandchildren, her Maltese named Raider, and cheering on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. She was especially fond of watching the WNBA and college “girls basketball” as she called it. She loved basketball and played on her high school basketball team.
Mell was an excellent home cook, grew backyard peaches and roses, and always had a kind word for anyone she’d meet. At Christmastime, she’d set up her extensive collection of Department 56 vignettes throughout her home and loved showing off all the snowy city and village scenes she’d created. Mell’s ability to make Christmas special each year was unmeasurable.
Mell is preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Fern Jones (Davis) and Alton Davis, stepfather Joe Jones, husband KG Halford, son Terry Halford, son-in-law Bruce Nichols and brother-in-law Frank Kagawa.
Mell is survived by her brother John Davis and sister-in-law Carolyn Oldham Davis, both of Amarillo, and her sister Edith Davis Kagawa of Oregon; her children, Paula Halford Nichols and Dennis Halford, both of San Antonio; her granddaughters, Cara Nichols and Emily Nichols, and great-granddaughter Camilla Nichols, all of San Antonio; niece Shauna Davis Lakey and her husband Don Lakey of Amarillo; niece Kathy Kagawa Dalrymple and her husband Sam Dalrymple of Oregon; great-nieces and great-nephews Kinsey Lakey, Tanner Lakey, Shaun Lakey , Karli Lakey, and great grandniece Brecklyn Lakey.
