Nell Stewart

receive friends this evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at Resthaven. Mrs. Stewart passed away on Tuesday,

January 7, 2014. Nell Burgess was born on April 21, 1921 in Battiest, OK to Curtis and Bertha (Tate) Burgess.

Nell became a member of the Baptist church at an early age and was a lifelong faithful member. She

married the love of her life, Wilson Stewart on May 25, 1940 in Oklahoma. Nell was a strong believer in

family closeness. She loved cooking and baking for them, and especially making jellies of all flavors for

her family and friends. Nell worked many years in the meat markets of Lubbock grocery stores. She

started out working at the meat market in Piggly Wiggly. She packaged meat, offered cooking suggestions

to customers, and could “package meat as good as any man ever could”. From Piggly Wiggly, Nell went to

work in the meat market for Furr’s Grocery Store. Nell made long time friends with the other employees

and customers of both grocery stores. She retired from Furr’s in 1981. Nell was preceded in death by her

parents, many siblings, and her husband of 68 years. Those left to cherish her memory include her son,

Jim and his wife, Doris of Lubbock; daughters, Margaret Long and her husband, Don of Montague, TX and

Kay Gunter and her husband, Charlie of Whitehouse, TX; brothers Wayne Coleman and wife, Bobbie of

Lubbock, Carl Coleman and wife, Joyce of Oklahoma, and A.W. “Sonny” and his wife, Wilda of Kansas;

8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a

host of friends. Her family would like to offer a special “thank you” to the employees of Cottage Village, the

staff of Hospice of Lubbock, and the staff of Covenant Palliative Care for taking such good care of their loving
