Nellie Sue Walker was born on July 23, 1945 at West Texas Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Frederick Earl Walker and Annie Laura Maynard Walker also by her husband of 34 years, Marcus Potter and several siblings. She was the youngest of eight children born in the Walker family. Nellie's seven siblings; Eldena, Georgia, Fred Jr., Connie, Hilton, Tevis, and Imagene were very close in their relationships. Nellie had many nieces and nephews close in age to herself whom she grew up with and considered her closest friends.
Faith was a priority in Nellie's life. She held high moral standards and was worried about the moral decay she saw around her. She held deep spiritual beliefs that she was willing to share with anyone she met. She was a member of the 12th Street Church of Christ and faithfully attended at home via the internet.
As a young girl, Nellie was able to put her natural abilities to work healing animals that she had found abandonded by their mothers, and nursing them back to health. She was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was named Tina, a poodle-chihuaua mix, her companion for over 15 years.
Nellie's giving nature and acts of service were developed during her childhood in Shallowater. As she grew up; she enjoyed jacks, marbles, playing outside, climbing trees and collecting memorabilia. She saved many of her toys and loved to sing and play the guitar. She grew up in the era of Big Bands, Doo Wop, the Beatles and Elvis. She collected records and trading cards of her favorite singers and bands.
On August 13th, 1965 Nellie exchanged wedding vows with Marcus Lynn Potter in Lubbock, Texas at her sister Imagene's home. Marcus and Nellie were meant for eachother. They enjoyed traveling and lived in many states during their early years of marriage. They were married 34 years and had five children. Nellie was ever watchful of her children. She worried about them and was deeply concerned for their development as they grew up and beyond. Marcus and Nellie enforced the rules as needed to ensure that their children were properly raised. They were blessed with five children very close in age; Sheri, Karyn, Kathy, Don, and Michelle. They were also blessed with sixteen grandchildren, and twenty three great grandchildren. One of Nellie’s most endearing qualities was her uncanny ability to remember important dates and anniversaries for her family. Organizing a celebration for her family and friends was something she always looked forward to. When it came time to travel or take a vacation, she made sure that she packed enough food for her little army. Some of her favorite vacations included Colorado, New Mexico and many trips and travelling across the United States. Those journeys captured many memories in photographs that she lovingly arranged in photo albums.
Nellie was always striving to make improvements in her home and in her career. Her primary occupation was homemaker; however after the death of her husband, Marcus, she went to work full time. She successfully completed a course in adulthood to obtain her GED and a course in secretarial work at a local technical college. Her pursuits made her children very proud. Nellie worked as a Secretary and Hostess at the Sherrick Memorial Home for Ladies. She always loved the ladies whom she served. She stated many times that the Ladies of the Sherrick were crucial to helping her adjust to her new life as a widow; as were her sisters Imagene and Georgia. She always kept up with technology and enjoyed texting with her children and grandchildren. She often was the "Handy woman" to her siblings when they needed a "Ms. Fix-it". She always had a competitive nature and taught her children to have fun playing games but never let anyone win easily. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others and share their interests as well.
After retirement her favorite activities were her hobbies and playing with her grandchildren; Sarah, Jarret, Jacob, Heather, Faye, Audrey, Seth, Rachel, Shelby, Nathaniel, Briana, Kaeleb, Chase, Eryn, Dairrica and Caitlyn. She enjoyed sharing her skills of Crafting, Fishing, Painting, Board and Card Games, Dominoes,Tinkering and Home Improvement with them.
