Norma was born on August 24, 1938 in Throckmorton, TX, to James Wilson Nichols and Rosa Ethel Smith Nichols. She moved to Midland with her parents and little sister, of whom she referred to as her favorite, Judy in the early 50’s. She graduated from Midland High School 1956 and married her long time husband, Clyde Robert Fisher, Jr on June 24, 1956 (64 years!). She resided in Midland with her husband, until they moved to Lubbock in the early 2000’s.
Norma worked as an Elementary school secretary at Midland Independent School District serving under Mamie Williams (whom she loved very much!), Clyde Hobbs and LeRoy Shannon at Pease Elementary and Scharbauer Elementary. As a side note, if anybody thinks that the school principal is the one that runs the school - they would be wrong. If there's anything you want to know about the school...ask the secretary!
Norma enjoyed traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, cooking, sewing, crafting, playing games, and collecting and displaying her "treasures" (bird houses, Santa Clauses, villages & porcelain roses). She put her whole heart into everything she did!
She played volleyball in high school, and carried on her love of watching sports throughout her life. Norma graduated from Midland High School (the Bulldogs), although, when her daughters started school at Robert E. Lee High School, she became an AVID Rebel fan!
Norma and Clyde - along with their friend Noma Wallace, followed the Rebels rain or shine, in town or out-of-town, everywhere they went. Even after all the girls graduated, they continued traveling with the football team. Judy recalls a story of a conversation with their mother, Rosa (Mema): Mema commented to Judy: "I hope I don't pass away on a game day. Norma won't be able to come.” After moving to Lubbock she continued her love of sports, by rooting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders at various events. She also enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren throughout the years at band and drama performances and sporting events.
Norma was a member of Kingsridge Church of Christ, of Lubbock, TX, a past member of Cuthbert & Austin St. Church of Christ in Midland and Billy Hext Road Church of Christ in Odessa
Norma was a people person. She enjoyed entertaining and getting to know other people. As the saying goes, she “never met a stranger!”
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; James Wilson Nichols and Rosa Ethel Smith Nichols.
