Ollie Odell "Papa" Sturdivant, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday May 6, 2016. He was born December 15, 1930 in Corpus Christi Texas to Leonard Sturdivant and Melvina Steen. Dell's family moved to Mason Texas where he and his 3 brothers, Leonard, Martin and Franklin spent most of their childhood.
At the age of 15, Dell left Mason to pursue his dream of becoming a carpenter. He worked many years and many places and in 1953 became the proud father of his only child, Barbara Dell. Eventually, Dell found himself in Lubbock Texas where he met and married Bernice Lamb and they raised his daughter Barbara together. He continued to work as an expert carpenter and not only helped build the Texas Tech Library, but also his wife's dream home.
Dell worked for Furr's Corporation for many years before starting a rental property business with his wife. After a wonderful 28 year marriage, Bernice passed away and Dell continued to operate and grow Sturdivant Rentals. He and his granddaughter Cotha ran the rental business side by side and continued to do so until his retirement. Through the years, Dell met and fell in love with Enedina "Annie" Vara and they enjoyed their 18 years together with their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren until Annie's passing.
Those who knew Dell best knew he loved all his grandchildren more than anything in the world. Dell was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and both of the loves of his life. He is survived by his daughter Barbara, granddaughter Cotha, great-grandkids Brittany, Jeremy (Amy), Dalton, and Cheyenne, and great-great-grandsons Anthony and Zac. Dell was a loving husband and a family man. He has left behind an amazing legacy that will never be forgotten.
Papa we love you tremendously and you will forever be in our hearts.
