Grandpa, I just wanted to thank you for all that you showed me! I miss you everyday, and you are always in my prayers! I love you grandpa.

A dear friend. He rode to Mason with my daughter and me. There he picked up an old car and Mr. Brawley rode with him on to San Antonio. Rain was pretty bad and the wipers did not work on the old car. Mr Brawley had his arm out the window pushing them. They found a piece of string and they scooted on down the road, O'Dell driving, and Mr Brawley pulling the string attached to the wipers. We made it to Franklins like that. Lots of fun memories!

I’ve known him my entire life and so has my mom. Great man, he would do anything for anyone that needed help. He will be missed! I remember all the awesome cars he had too!

I have only great memories of the time I lived in your house during college! O'Dell was one of those people that you never forget.... Kind of like you Cotha :) I think my favorite memory of him was how he always kept a glass of milk in the fridge and every time he would walk by the fridge he would take a swig and just keep on going ... On to the next job that needed to be done. What a hard worker he was .... Kind of like you Cotha. You two are a lot alike !! He will be missed for sure. I'm thankful we are neighbors ... PaPa was always very sweet and always was nice to Xavier. We loved him dearly and he is greatly missed.

I met Dell about 41 years ago. He started out as a disciplinarian, and became a mentor. He never missed an opportunity to teach me something, as he did with most everyone he came in contact with. I continue to pray for comfort for all his loved ones and feel so fortunate that he was such an important part of my own life. I miss him dearly already, but know he is now fully healed and without pain and look forward to the day I see him again!

Our greatest memory of Dell is when we were building our house.  We would be working and he would come to see the progress we had made.  He was always glad to see that we were doing things "the right way" as he said.  Sometimes we would not know he was there and he would give us a scare.  He would tell us stories of the way he used to do things back in the day.  He was a hard worker and would help anyone in need.  We always enjoyed a break when Dell came to visit as he shared stories about his family, whom he loved.  We are glad we got to know O'dell and hear about his old school ways of how to build things and get it done right.  He was a blessing to many and will be missed.

30 years seems like a long time but it seems like only yesterday Odel & I would be drinking coffee, talking about the latest events. I had the privilege to know & share his stories, life's lessons, and his family's history. He was always so kind to my family when my kids were around. I got to work on just about all his vehicles and hear the history of all of them. Always a smile and a handshake, and a helping hand whenever I needed it. I miss the conversations in his little office. I know he is in a better place but I still miss him. Till we meet again, Mark.

I had the honor of caring for Ollie. He was a great man, and had a smile that lit up a room. As a nurse there are always patients that impact your life, for me he was one of those patients. He will be missed.

Miss you Odel and so I'll never forget all that you did for me when I was younger... You were such a giving man with a heart of gold... Prayers sent to your family .. I love you Çotha , Brittany and Bubba with all my heart....

I met Dell just by chance, I guess around 10 years ago.  I happened to sit next to him on a plane from Dallas to Lubbock.  We started talking and the next thing I knew the stewardess was telling us it was time to get off the plane.  I don't remember the takeoff or the landing of that flight, but I do remember laughing hard enough that the folks behind us told Dell and I to keep it down.  I used to travel to Lubbock often in those days and I never missed an opportunity to pay him a visit.  I don't have a long list of friends in this world and I'm proud to have counted Dell as one of them.  He was a fine man and he'll be missed by all that knew him.

Cotha, I am so sorry for yall's loss.  I remember him coming into the restaurant and I would always giving him a hard time.  He would always smile and give it right back to me.  He was a great person and would always brighten my day when he would come in.  I wish that I could have gotten to know him better.  He will truly be missed, but he is in a better place.

I met Del in 1954. He owned the clothes on his back, and a hammer. I remember going with him one Saturday morning to help him lay oak flooring in a house he was working on. I soon found out that I didn't understand the meaning of hard work. He laid ten times more than I thought any human could do. He did kid me a little about that day, but it was his way of telling me I was his friend. Hard work and friendship were his hallmarks, things I have always tried to emulate in my own life. I hope I have done half as well.

He was an amazing man always willing to share his knowledge about anything from life to work. He had a careing heart. To me he was always a simple man from the way he dress to the way he lived . He always showed me love as if I was him owen. I happy for God putting him in my path I may not have had a father but he was one of the men that help me grown to a man

I don't know if you knew this, but if I had been a boy, I was going to be named after Odell.  That's how much he meant to Mother.  She always called him the kissing cousin.  I never knew what that was about...I'm sure there was a story.  I remember him and stories of him all my life.  I think I was about 6 the first time I remember going to visit him. One of my most memorable saying from him was once when Mother was giving him a haircut.  He was telling her how he wanted it and when she finally got it the way he wanted he said, "Now you're cooking with gas".  That was the first time I had ever heard that.  There are many more memories, but those are a few.

My great-grandpa was the most amazing man, and he loved his family more than anything in the world. He has always been such a big and important part of my life. He was a part of every milestone in not only my life, but my son’s as well. He was there for every holiday, first day of school, sporting events, school events, and so much more. We didn’t always see eye to eye, and I even disappointed him a few times, but regardless he was my Papa and he never left my side. We loved each other so much, and I’m grateful for the time we had with each other. Since I was a little girl, he would take me out of town with him, and he even got me started on my coffee obsession. He would eat catfish every Friday night and he was quick to always share it with me. He loved going to eat at Furr’s on Sundays, and I will always think of him when I eat there, or have catfish. Papa was a very loving and kind man, but he was also very stern. He taught me how to go fishing, shoot a gun, and the importance of hard work and family. He loved to talk about his past and tell us all of his childhood memories. He was so proud of my son and he loved him with all of his heart. It makes me happy that they were able to know each other, and for the time that they did have together. Papa was my biggest fan and supporter. He was so proud of me for continuing my education and getting my first college degree. It made us both very happy that he was able to see me walk the stage. I wish that he could've been able to see me graduate from nursing school this winter. I will graduate December 16th, which is the day after his birthday. I know he will be there with me in spirit, not only that day, but also everyday. I will forever cherish every minute I was able to share with him. I saw him almost every day from the time I was born until the day he was called home by God. I know that death is inevitable, but at the same time, I never thought that the day would come when it would be time to say goodbye. I watched him slowly slip away more and more everyday. I know that he was tired and confused, but I didn't want to let him go. May 6th was one of the hardest days of my life. I had to let go of the man who had always been there for me. I knew he was at peace and he was no longer tired, but it still shattered my heart into a million pieces. If I would've known that was the last day he would be with us, I would've hugged him tight and never let go. My grandpa was my best friend and he was the glue of our family. Things will forever be changed without him, but we will continue to make him proud and carry on his legacy. Papa I miss you so much, and I love you more than words can express. Until I see you again, Rest In Peace.

I love my grandpa because he did a lot for me. He would go to my baseball games, and I wish he could've made it to all of my games. One of the saddest moments of my life was on May 5, 2016. After one of my baseball games me and my dad went to go see him at the nursing home, because they said he might pass away. So the next day at 6am he passed away. My mom woke me up and told me what happened and I cried. I love him and miss him. I wish I could've said goodbye to him and told him that I love him one more time. I love you Papa.

Very sadden to hear of your loss Cotha.  I have so many fond memories of my Uncle O'Dell.  He was always the leader of the family bringing the brother's together and being there for all.  I will never forget our fishing trips to the Llano river every summer as a kid or my trips to Lubbock to spend a few weeks with him and Aunt Bernice.  You will be missed.  Rest in peace.

I loved Dell, he was so good to me. I rented from him and lived in his home for almost 2 years. Usually on Friday night most everyone was out on the town. Dell would go get fish and we would eat together. He talked A lot about Cotha whom he loved so much. We discussed, God A lot, I was so blessed to know that he received Jesus as his Lord and Savior. I miss him very much, but I'm so happy he is with his Mom in Heaven. He was as always so very kind to me and all the ladies who lived in his home. I will see you again Dell.

I was so blessed to have a Papa like mine a “great-grandpa" at that. My childhood with my Papa was him always having his arms wide open saying, “Come hug your papa” and oh how quick I'd run to give him a big hug! He loved all his grandkids dearly, and we always had everything we needed for school, like school supplies, clothes, or lunch money. He was also there for anything sports related. I remember when I was in Boy Scouts and I needed to build a wooden box car to race, I knew just the man to go to. My grandpa and I spent hours in his garage cutting, shaping, sanding, and painting my race car to make it perfect. When race day came, he was right there, along with my family cheering me on! He also knew a lot about guns, and he taught me how to shoot my first 22LR gun. Then on the weekends my sister and I would spend the night with him and we would go over to Mamas house to eat dinner. I always loved Friday's because we would always eat catfish. Once we were back at his house I would massage his back with his back massager for 5-10 minutes, then we would watch Walker Texas Ranger together, and my sister would give him a pedicure before the 10 o'clock news. He would give us each a few bucks to go buy a candy or a toy. After the news was over we would go into the kitchen to eat ice-cream and or cookies and milk. Then he'd say, “Ok boy, time to turn the lights out.” He would go to bed and I would try to sleep on the couch, but I always ended up crawling into bed with him to sleep back to back. I always felt safer being with him. He was always up before 6am reading his newspaper, and boiling his water to shave with. Once he started making breakfast, he would come in to wake me up. Sometimes he would wake me up nicely and other times he did it by splashing water on me. He thought it was hilarious and now that I think back on it, I find it funny too. My Papa was a prankster, and if anyone knew him, they knew this too. He always carried an eyeglass pouch in his shirt pocket with pen, pencil, and note pad in it. He would use his pencil to make people think a bug was crawling on them. One of the funniest things I remember, is when he took my sister Brittany, my mom Cotha, and I to Mason several years ago. I was either 8 or 9, and we went to a bat cave. He put his pencil in my moms hair, and she screamed so loud and ran off. She thought she was being attacked by a bat. Papa and I laughed so hard, and so did everyone else there! I also remember when anyone would fall off a bike or trip over something he'd check the floor first to see if it was cracked just to be funny. With all that being said, he was a serious man when it came to work. He taught me from a young age that you have to work for what you want in life. I must say from all the rental property's he owned and everything he accomplished in life, he was a very successful man. I will always look up to him and make sure I am as successful in life as he was. On my 16th birthday he gave me my first truck, a 1983 F150. It was nothing fancy but I will forever cherish it. All of our family and friends called it “Bubba’s truck” since I was a baby, because he planned on giving it to me when I was old enough. Ever since that day I've had a job and started to make my own money, and I must say I'm proud of where I'm at in life. I'm now married to a great woman and have a wonderful stepson, who he called “Cowboy”. I bought a brand new car on my own, and I am starting to look into buying my first home. I also really want to start a business of my own some day soon. I have so many great memories with this amazing man. I'm so thankful for the last vacation he took us all on to Mason & Corpus Christi. We went for a week and he showed us where he grew up at. He even spent time with us at the beach, just watching us play and have a good time, and he didn't complain a single bit on that trip. Now looking back on it, I feel like he knew his time was limited, and he wanted to spend special time with his family. That vacation will forever be the best one in my life because I got to spend everyday with him. About a year or so after that trip my mom decided it would best to move in with him to start taking care of him. My mom and sister knew he was slipping and showing early signs of Alzheimer’s. I didn't see it or just really didn't want to accept it. After moving in with him, I was able to spend every lunch hour with him. He would join me in the kitchen to chat about life and to see how my day was going. He would tell me all the time that when he would see the Suddenlink commercials he would think of me. He would also tell me that he was so proud that I had my own company work truck and that I am doing great things with my life. Sometimes he would talk to me about his younger days. He had so many stories, and I always loved listening to them, but before we knew it, my lunch hour was up and I had to go back to work. After work we would all have dinner together as a family, and then we would split off to our bedrooms to watch TV and get ready for bed. He would still watch the news, have a snack, and then go on to bed. After several months of me witnessing him getting more confused about things, I started sleeping down stairs by the fire place to keep warm and to keep an eye on him. I wanted to make sure he didn't wonder off in the night or slip and fall outside while trying to get the newspaper. I get angry at myself, because the night before Thanksgiving I decided to sleep upstairs in my room, and that's when he fell beside his bed in the middle of the night. I wasn't there to help him when it happened and I woke up to my mom screaming, “Bubba hurry, Papa fell!” I jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs to help him. When I got to his room, he was face down and moaning in pain. Thank God the EMT’s arrived quickly and got him to the emergency room. We found out that he had broken 4 ribs and fractured a couple others. He then spent a few weeks in rehab to get his strength back, and he was doing great. Then slowly things started to go down hill. I absolutely hated to see my Papa like that, and I just wished that everything would go back to normal. I remember the day when I told him I was going to get married and that the wedding was around the corner. He got tears in his eyes and asked, “Well can I come?” I told him, “Grandpa you're the first person on my guest list!” He smiled, gave me a hug, and said, “I can't wait.” My grandpa being at my wedding made my day complete! I am happy that I was able to go fishing with him and Aunt Gladys one last time. He loved it! We had a family picnic and it was a cool breezy day. It was about 8 months later, I received the horrible news that he only had about 24 hours left to live. I didn't want to accept it at all and I immediately went to his bedside for hours. I was holding his hand, telling him stories, and praying that he could hear me. I hugged him tight several times and told him I loved him over and over. I told him it was ok to let go so he would not be in pain anymore, and that I would see him later. Around midnight I left because I had a test in the morning for work. It was about 6 that morning that I got the phone call I never wanted. My mom was on the other end and she told me that he had just passed away. I got out of bed to get dressed and just collapsed to the floor and cried like a baby. I kept telling myself that this couldn't be happening. I had to force myself to get up and get dressed. I raced to the nursing home to be with my family in this difficult time. My great-grandpa was a man of unbendable steel and will forever be my hero. Papa it's never goodbye, it's I'll see you later. You are now gone, but will never be forgotten. I love you so much.

I want to start out by saying that my grandpa was a great man, who I looked up to, and loved very much. I miss him dearly, and I am who I am today because of him. He taught me so much and I’m very grateful for it. He was a very loving and kind man, and he would help out anyone that he could. He was a very hard worker, and he definitely wasn't one to slow down. He was my biggest supporter and he always believed in me.He was very proud of my accomplishments and as well I was very proud to call him my Papa. We had an amazing journey together, and we knew we could always count on each other, no matter what. Of course we had our ups and downs, but in the end who doesn’t. For many years we worked side by side, day in and day out. Once I noticed his health and mind were declining, I made the decision to move in with him. I wanted nothing but to take care of him. It was a lot of work, but I have no regrets. I didn't want him in a nursing home. He fell one night and had to go to the hospital. As a result of that fall, he was never able to walk again. I was eventually forced to place him in a nursing home, because he was a complete two person transfer, and I was unable to care for him the way I had been doing. This was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I went to see him almost everyday, to feed him and visit with him. I also kept the nurses on their toes, they never knew when I was going to show up for a visit. I would even go late at night just to make sure they had put his oxygen on him, brushed his teeth, and to check him for bed sores. I was his only voice and advocate. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about him, and even cry. I would give anything just to be able to talk to him, put my arms around him, give him a kiss on the cheek, and tell him “I love you” just one more time. I know that he is in a better place now, and that he isn't suffering anymore. It broke my heart to lose him, and a part of me went with him the day God called him home. You will always be my Papa. Keep a place warm for me, for when the day that God calls me home. I will always remember you, and I love you always. Till we meet again Papa.

I first encountered Odell Sturdivant about 20 years ago when I answered an ad in the Avalanche Journal for a room to rent. What an experience! I've never met anyone like him before or since. He was always smiling. He invariably had great stories to tell - though after a while I suspected that some of them might have been slightly embellished. He said he kept the curtains closed to avoid driveby shootings. He said he always backed into his parking places so he could make a quick getaway if he needed to. Being around Dell was always interesting.

Dell was proud of the house he built for his dear wife Bernice, and he loved his family. It was a privilege to have known him, and through him to know Cotha, Brittany and Jeremy. Rest in peace, Dell. You will be missed.

Terribly sorry for the loss of your dear grandfather.  He was a very sweeet person.  Enjoyed the times I spent with him when he would go to Greenville to visit my sisters.  May God bless and keep you during this time of turmoil in your life.  Will hold you up in prayer.

Sorry for your loss Cotha. Me and your grandpa go a long ways back. He was a good man with alot of wisdom. He would stand toe to toe with you when he knew he was right and would always willing to lend you a hand so long as you were willing to help yourself. I have known papa as long as ive known Cotha & Jeremy, which has been the past 12 years.. I met him when my brother & sister started renting from him. My first impression of him was "gah he stays busy & on his feet" He was a kind hearted, loving, blessed papa. I have had the family in my continued prayers & if there is anything at all you guys need im here!! Love yall!

Cotha, I am so sorry for your loss! I loved him. I called him Pops. He was quite a character. This was such a sweet man who made me smile. When I told him I saw you or talked to you his whole face lit up like the Fourth of July. He loved his family. He was such a blessing. And I'm so glad I got to be a part of his life. I was so upset I couldn't make it to his service. I'm sorry. I tried to but I couldn't get back into town that day. I love you girl! Always and forever.

What an amazing man....the two of you had an amazing journey together.  Praying for you and your family during this difficult time.

I will always remember the 5's  . He was always a sweet man to me.

The first time Kathy took me to Lubbock and I met Odell, he took me aside and asked me, "Young man, have you ever been to jail?" I had to answer correctly (no, of course), but always wondered if it was a trick question!  From that time to the time he passed, we knew we could count on him, and watched him enjoy his family in the last season of his life. He will always be with us...and the lord.
