Sherry Lynn Byers was born on June 11th, 1941 in Stamford, Texas, to Floyd and Edna Holloman. Her 3 siblings, Mary Jo, Don, and Paul all preceded her in death. The family moved to Lubbock in 1949, and Sherry graduated from Lubbock High School in 1959. She fell in love with and married Donald Odell Byers in 1977. This marriage included 5 children, Greg and Rhonda Byers, along with Hutch, Lyndee, and Paul Haley.
Sherry and Don were faithful, active members of Northside Church of Christ, Heart to Heart outreach ministry, and South Plains Church of Christ. Serving as teachers in the 2 year olds’ class and providing meals for families grieving the loss of loved ones. She worked for many years at Lubbock National Bank, retiring in 1994 as Assistant Vice President.
Don and Sherry’s home was always warm and welcoming to anyone who showed up at the door, and many did. Whether it was for a meal, to stay a few days or years, people were loved and cared for. Most of the live-ins felt as if they had joined the family, and to Don and Sherry the feeling was mutual (or as Don says, “mucilage”). One in particular, Caron McMillian, is considered an adopted daughter.
Sherry was preceded in death by her dear daughter, Lyndee Harrell. Survivors include her husband, Don, and their children (with spouses): Greg Byers (Janet), Rhonda Pool (Keith), Hutch Haley (Terri), Dan Harrell (Lyndee’s surviving spouse) and Paul Haley (Cobey). She is also survived by 18 grandchildren: Heather, Myndee, Haley, Katie Beth, Devin, Hanna, Holly, Kyler, Hunter, Garrett, Hattie, Allison, Eliza, Sidney, Hudson, Susanna, Eva, and Britta. Sherry also leaves behind 28 great-grandchildren.
