

Thomas “Tommy” R. Staples Jr., 84, of Lubbock, went to be with his Savior on April 23, 2022. Tommy was born January 9, 1938, to Russell and Bessie Staples in Wichita Falls, Texas.Following graduation from Lubbock High School in 1956, Tommy attended Texas Tech University. He, then, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in December 1956 and served three years. After discharge, he returned to Lubbock and began his career at Southwestern Public Services, where he was employed for 40 years.In 1960, Tommy met the love of his life, Lavorise, and they married on July 1, 1960. They have been married just short of 62 years. Their only child, Rhonda Smith, was born in October of 1961.Tommy was a long-time member of Southcrest Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years. He was a devoted “granddaddy” and loved spending time with his family and friends.Tommy was preceded in death by his parents.Tommy leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Lavorise; daughter, Rhonda Smith (Dan); granddaughter, Summer Hutchings (Jason); grandson, Stephen Smith; and sister, Peggy Thomas. He also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews, and friends.Tommy’s celebration of life will be Wednesday, April 27 at 1:00 pm at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock.
