Tommy Ray Barnett slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus Saturday, January 17, 2026. Leading the welcoming party there was his dad, Clark Ray Barnett and granddaughter Brynlee Mae Barnett, grandparents and several close friends.
Tommy Barnett was born on October 27, 1953, in Lubbock, Texas, to Clark and Wanda Barnett where he grew up, graduating from Monterey High School and then Texas Tech University. He was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, making lifelong friends. It was there he met the love of his life, Marla Davis Barnett. They were blessed to share 49 years of marriage, raising two outstanding young men, Joshua Thomas Barnett and Jacob Clark Barnett.
He joined Barnett Brothers Brokerage upon graduation, working with his dad and uncles. He went on to serve as a dedicated leader, growing the business and forming lasting relationships with many customers and clients, ultimately continuing his career with Acosta Sales & Marketing making a lasting impact in the food industry. The business afforded him and Marla many opportunities to travel to amazing destinations, creating lifelong friendships still cherished today. He knew not only client, customer and colleague names, but their families and life stories as well.
During his early years, Tommy dedicated his life to coaching his sons in several sports, but mostly baseball where he was actively involved on the Western Little League board. He was a role model and mentor to not only his sons but to many in sports, scouts, and famously teaching boys Sunday school at LakeRidge Methodist Church where he enticed attendance with Dr. Pepper and Donuts.
Tommy had a gift for making everyone feel like a friend, loving people as if they were his own family, and brightening every room with his easy smile. He was generous to a fault and wouldn’t turn down anyone in need. He lived life to the fullest and embraced it with joy, passion, smiles, jokes, and an open heart. On January 17, 2026, he set out on his next great adventure, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and stories that will be treasured forever.
To his family, he was Dad, Uncle Tommy, Blue, and Cuppie but to everyone else, he was a friend, mentor, and storyteller. His love for the Red Raiders, Jimmy Buffett and the Beatles were only overshadowed by his giant love for his family. His happiest moments were spent with them making memories, relaxing in the mountains or with his feet in the sand. Taking vacations every year and making sure to see his grandchildren as often as he could.
Tommy’s love for Jesus Christ was the anchor of his life, and he followed Him with a sincerity and devotion that touched everyone who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marla; his sons, Joshua Barnett of Lubbock and Jacob Barnett and wife Ashley; their children, his grandchildren Bailey and Beckett of Cypress, his sisters Debbie Crowder of Plainview and Pam Jenkins and husband Mike of Ruidoso, NM, numerous nieces and nephews, along with a multitude of cousins aunts and uncles. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The family will host a visitation on Thursday, January 29, 2026 from 6-8pm at Lake Ridge Chapel. They will celebrate his life on January 30, 2026 at 10:00am at LakeRidge Methodist Church in Lubbock, TX and invite all who loved him to join in remembering a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Tommy’s heart and passion led him to become the liaison for the Aisles of Smiles program between the grocery and food industry and MDA. Please direct the donations to Camp John Marc, our local MDA camp. www.mda.org
