

Born November 25, 1923 to W.E. and Mary Jane Higginbotham, he was the eldest of six children. He was born at Four Corners, Texas, near Whiteflat in Motley County.
He graduated with honors from Roosevelt High School in 1940. He served with the Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He returned home to receive his accounting degree from Texas Tech University in 1950.
He married the love of his life, Jolene Bloodworth, 64 years ago on June 15, 1948. They raised three daughters together.
He received his C.P.A. in 1958 while employed with Arthur Andersen and Company in Houston and later Dallas, Texas.
In 1963, he and his family moved to Whiteflat, Texas to manage the family farm. He farmed for 16 years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Matador, Texas and maintained a private accounting practice there for several years.
In 1979, he retired from farming and returned to private accounting as accounting manager for Plains Coop Oil Mill in Lubbock. He was with them until his retirement in 1991.
Vernon is survived by his wife Jolene, their three daughters, Jan McClure and husband Weaver McClure of Denton Texas, Nancy Palmer and husband Tommy Palmer and Betty Waits and husband Charles Waits, all of Lubbock, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 10 AM in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel, with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held tonight from 6-8 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home.
