She was born on December 21, 1927 at home in Forrest County to Plummer and Essie Johnson McCardle.
Mary Sue had been a long time member of First Baptist Church, Lumberton. Over the years she served as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, choir member and JOY club leader. Her interests were largely in Bible study, sewing and related handcrafts along with working in the outdoors with her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved to read and encouraged her children to reach for the benefits of higher education by acquiring college educations. She worked for many years alongside her husband in the dairy barn and the fields tending the cows. Later after I-59 divided the farm land she was employed as a line supervisor at Movie Star, Inc. When an opportunity of opening a fabric shop happened, she ventured into sales with a business located on Lumberton’s Main Street. She enjoyed the contact with customers, friends and relatives but abandoned her shop to care for her husband after his MS diagnosis.
She traveled widely; through the continental states along with Hawaii, Barbados, England, Scotland, Italy, Israel and Jordan. The love of music was inherited and encouraged with her children and grandchildren. She loved to learn along with gardening with a hoe. Mickey, her cat, was much a partner and companion in her latter years along with Lady, her dog.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Lamar Nursing Home for their tender care of Mary Sue in her life there.
