Born November 5, 1938 in Peoria Illinois, he was the son of the late Samuel David and Grace Viola Garland Espenscheid. David’s life was characterized by love. Although he had served in both the Army and the Navy, he held a special affinity for the Navy. As a dedicated member of Thomas Road Baptist Church he was involved in their choir and was an ordained minister. David’s passion for serving his community was evident through his work as an EMT for the Campbell County Rescue Squad, his volunteer work for Lynchburg General Hospital. He was also a committed educator, having taught at Lynchburg City Schools, and in several states, for over three decades and tutoring home-bound students when he could. With a degree in counseling David found fulfillment in helping others. Above all, his family held a special place in his heart. David loved trees and the thought of them being cut down would break his heart. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather that put his family above all else.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sons Brian David Espenscheid and Jonathan Mark Espenscheid.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 65 years Alice Naramore Espenscheid; his children Daniel Espenscheid and his wife Deborah, Laura Espenscheid Rose and her husband Tom, Stephen Espenscheid and his wife Sarah, Sherry Espenscheid Scott; his brother Lyle Espenscheid and his wife Judy; his 14 grandchildren and his 28 great-grandchildren whom affectionately called him “Grampy”.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Thomas Road Pate Chapel at 1:00pm officiated by Pastor Rick Rasberry. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service
