Born in Lynchburg on July 6, 1988, Derek was a graduate of Liberty Christian Academy, class of 2006. From an early age, Derek developed a passion for technology and music. He began volunteering at Thomas Road Baptist Church, where he ran the sound equipment for the youth department. This experience sparked his lifelong dedication to sound engineering, a passion he carried into his adult life.
After relocating to Nashville, TN, Derek continued his work as a sound engineer, touring with artists like Skillet. Most recently he served at Crosspoint Church, where he oversaw sound operations for all six campuses. His technical expertise and calm under pressure were admired by his colleagues and the church community.
Derek was also known for his love of Christmas. Each year, he created an elaborate computer-automated light display at his home, synchronizing the lights with music. This annual tradition brought joy to his family, friends, and neighbors.
He is survived by his loving parents, Kenneth and Vicki Toews; two sisters, Rayna Brandt and her husband, Timothy, and their children, Mikhail, Tessa, and Deklan, and Jaclyn MacGregor and her husband, Shane.
A graveside inurnment service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
