Born on February 18, 1939, in Lynchburg, Donald was the only son of the late Eugene Page Harris and Ruby Staton Harris.
Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Carole T. Harris. He is also survived by two sons, Don Harris, Jr. (Cathy) of Campbell Co, and Michael Harris (Kathy) of Wake Forest, N.C., three grandchildren; Andrew Harris of Montana, Zachary Harris (Kristina) of Wake Forest, N.C., and Emily Wooge (Emerson) of Hardy, VA, one great granddaughter, Hunter Marie Harris of N.C.
Don retired from Sears after 35 years. During his years of working his job, he also had his own appliance business with about 200 customers. In his youth he loved cars of course, especially Thunderbirds. Don was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for Cub and Troop 19 in Lynchburg, VA. He worked in Scouting for 25 years earning the district award of Merit and the Blue Ridge council highest honor, Silver Beaver.
He was quite the animal lover, always finding little lost puppies and kittens and bringing them home. When he found out Lynchburg, VA would be presenting its first Bateau to the race, he was one of the first to volunteer to help with the construction. He had hoped to go along on the trip down river, but work came first. Don researched and co-authored “The Lynchburg Heritage Trail’. He loved his two beagle boys, Lucky and Max, his last two he brought home.
