Ethel Haythe Patrick was born on March 12, 1916 in Gladys VA to the late John Gilbert Haythe and Pearline Brown Haythe. She joined Organ Chapel CME Church at an early age and was a faithful and dedicated member until her health declined. She loved God and she loved serving Him. Over the years, she served in many capacities at the church: Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, Steward, Stewardess, Treasurer and Trustee. She was faithful in every aspect of the word, always attending conferences and meetings whenever needed.
As dedicated as she was to her God who was always most important, she was just as faithful to her family. She loved children and always wanted them around her. Anyone who came into her home was cared for and loved just like her own. She raised over 100 children. Many of whom stayed with her from birth to adulthood. No one wanted to leave when they came to her house. Her love was pure agape, unconditional love.
She was preceded in death by one beloved daughter, Bessie Yuille, her precious grandson who she cared for from birth, Steven Douglas Smith Jr. and all of her beloved siblings who have waited for her so long.
She leaves to cherish her memory six devoted daughters, Sandra C. Smith, Dianne N. Hubbard, Cindy S. Watts, Shirley Lovelace, Renee Smith (Brian) and Nancy A Graves. Two loving sons: Dennis Graves and Thomas Graves. Her devoted caretaker and granddaughter who adored her, Temika Younger (James), Eighteen grandchildren whom she inspired and loved: Eddis Payne (Jessie), Victor Cardwell (Tonya), Chris Nowlin (Nigel), Shavon Watts, Jason Boyd, Rashoun Watts, Jermaine Jones, Brian Graves, Ashley Boyd, Tiffany Dews, Shamika Lovelace, Contrez Graves, Takia Mosby, Destiny and Asia Graves, Anthony Lovelace, and Christopher Patrick. Eight nieces whom she loved: Virginia Christie, Phyllis Smith (Alfred), Lois Blair, Enola Wood (Thomas), Faith Donerson, Pier Payne (Thomas), Wong Haythe, and Valerie Cunningham. One nephew, Ronald Duffy. A devoted great niece, Kelly Cecil (Moe). And a host of other great nieces, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
What a wonderful example she was to all who encountered her. She loved much and she prayed much. She was a mother to many over the years and a true definition of the Proverbs 31 woman. “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies….She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household….her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all….but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates” (Proverbs 31:10, 26-31)
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the Hills Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. John Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Patrick-Morgan Family Cemetery.
