Gracie (Grace) Hughes Melvin

Born April 3, 1937 in Halifax, VA, she was the oldest daughter of the late John Henry and Virginia Coleman Hughes and was also preceded in death by her sister, Helen and brother, Jack Hughes.

Mrs. Melvin was a dedicated educator for 31 years with the Lynchburg Public School System. She held a Bachelor of Science degree of Education from Virginia State University. Her faith in God was always passionate and relentless. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age at Five Forks Baptist Church in South Boston, VA and continued her walk and service at Tree of Life Ministries. Her love and devotion to her family and friends was healing and unwavering. Her commitment to educate and strengthen her community has transcended many generations.

Mrs. Melvin is survived by her daughter, Cathy Melvin Hiske (Allen), Goode, VA; her son, Leland D. Melvin, Lynchburg, VA; her granddaughter, Brittany Melvin; her great-granddaughter, Ciara Melvin, Forest, VA; two brothers, Thomas Hughes (Geneva) and Chandler Hughes, both Halifax, VA; two sisters, Bettye Robinson, and Virginia Louise Hughes, also Halifax, VA; one aunt, Mildred Clarke, Minneapolis, MN; one uncle, William Coleman, Alton, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, cousins, and friends.

A private Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Park View Community Mission at 2420 Memorial Ave. Lynchburg, VA 24501.
