Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Paul Ashley Humphrey and the late Nellie Giles Humphrey.
Gurley never met a stranger and was a very friendly and pleasant person. She was an administrative assistant at Horizon Behavioral Health Center for 15 years and she was a retired secretary in the Development Office at Randolph-Macon Woman's College (now Randolph College) after 20 years of service.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Bobby "Bo" L. Johnson, Jr. (Ivy) and James Michael Johnson (Jenni Riddle), all of Lynchburg; one brother, Glen Humphrey of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren, Cameron Harper, Julia Johnson, Ben Warren, Ty Johnson and Hunter Johnson and one great grandchild, Kade O'Neil.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
