

Born on August 5, 1937 in Danville, he was the son of the late John and Ethel Chapman.
Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955-1959 and the United States Army, where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, NC. He was an avid skydiver and was awarded Chinese Wings in 1961. He retired from GE and Ericsson and became a licensed real estate agent in Lynchburg to stay busy in his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Joyce Brenda Chapman.
Jim is survived by 6 children, Debra K. Coronel of Lynchburg; James O. Chapman, Jr. and fiancé Patricia Sutherland of Creedmoor, NC; Rodney D. Chapman and wife Susan of Madison Heights; Tina C. Campbell and husband Lester of Rustburg; Geoffrey D. Chapman and wife Evelyn of Lynchburg and Kevin T. Chapman and wife Shannon of Lynchburg; 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, John Henry Chapman of Biloxi, MS, Richard Chapman and wife Liz of Lynchburg, Charlie Michael Chapman and wife Brenda of Rustburg and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members that will miss him deeply.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Geoffrey and Evelyn Chapman for the special care provided to Jim over the last few months.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 6pm - 8 pm at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel. A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 1pm at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 16.
