James Howard Gowen

Born on August 27, 1929 in Campbell County, VA, he was a son of the late Wilson Rodwell Gowen and Stella Vivian Yeatts Gowen. James was a veteran of the United states Army and served in the Korean War. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and attended New Hope Methodist Church.

James was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord, his country, and his family. He was known for his deep patriotism and the strong bonds he shared with loved ones, especially the younger generations, in whom he took great joy. James found peace in the outdoors and spent much of his time caring for his home and land. He enjoyed mowing the lawn, gardening, and tending to his small orchard. He also took simple pleasure in watching the hummingbirds and other birds that gathered at his feeders. His quiet appreciation for nature reflected the steady and grounded life he lived.

James leaves behind his children, Donna Kerr (Clarence) and Mike Gowen (Anne); five siblings, Wayne Gowen, Emmett Gowen, Delphine G. Cash, Margaret G. Owens and Gloria Jean Peaks; ten grandchildren, Amy Phillips (Chris), Angie Lacy (Scott), Shannon Carhart (Jeff), Kim Troyer, Kevin Kerr (Kendra), Brooke Gowen, Katie Gowen, Shey Ward, Kyle Surratt and Jennifer Biggs (Mason); twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delama Susan Bailey Gowen; his grandson, James Matthew Gowen; three brothers, Burnell, Robert and Fred Gowen; and six sisters, Kathleen G. Slough, Geraldine G. Matthews, Lorraine G. Denton, Hazel G. Arthur, Shirley G. Ferrell and Ethel G. Hackworth.

A funeral service will be held at Whitten Timberlake Chapel on Friday, April 3, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Steve Stadtherr officiating. Interment in Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery in Gladys, VA will follow.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
