Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late John N. Wingfield, Jr. and Dorothy Goins Wingfield.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a time of service he held with great honor. Following his military service, he dedicated 27 years of hard work to the Lynchburg Foundry at Archer Creek before his retirement. Known for his strong work ethic and quiet dedication, John provided faithfully for his family throughout his life.
He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially watching football. A devoted fan of both the University of Alabama and the New York Jets, John rarely missed a game. His greatest enjoyment, however, came from cheering on his grandsons under the Friday night lights, where his pride and love for his family were evident to all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sylvia Bowen Wingfield; his daughter, Bethany Lloyd and husband, Christopher; his son, John Wingfield and wife, Shannon; six grandchildren, Landon Mays, Meghan Wingfield, John William Wingfield, Jacob Wingfield, Caitlin Lloyd, and Logan Lloyd; and one great-grandchild, Noah Brown.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Rev. Vernon Merritt officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16.
