Mary Douglas Smith Gray, 90, of Lynchburg passed away Monday, October 2, 2017. Born in Abingdon, VA, June 23, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Taylor G. Smith and Ruby Steele Smith and was preceded in death by her husband Burrill M. Gray and her sister Elizabeth Keele Smith Lynch
.
Mary’s endless selflessness can be seen in all aspects of her life and those of others. She was a loving, caring, and giving mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother with a pure heart of gold. Mary was a retired teacher with Lynchburg City Schools and she spent her life quietly finding opportunities to love and serve all who came across her path.
She is survived by her son, Joseph A. Dueno, two step-children, Dorothy G. Lombardi and Burrill M. Gray Jr.; niece, Martha Smith; three grandchildren, Lauren Malone, Kendra Dueno, and Dominic Lombardi; and four great-grandchildren, Ethan, Tanner, Sydney, and Brooklyn.
The family would like to thank Sylvia Morris for her endless love and care provided to Mary as well as the wonderful doctors and nurses at Lynchburg General Hospital.
A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Friday, October 6, 2017 at Heritage United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Paul Baker officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider donating to Heritage United Methodist Church, 582 Leesville Rd. Lynchburg, VA 24502 or the American Cancer Society, in memory of Mary Gray.
