Mary Dawson Quick was reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 63 years, Roy Franklin Quick, on Monday, June 22, 2015. Mary, also known as "Jacque", was born on December 22, 1919 in Agricola, VA, to Henry Alexander Dawson and Mary Barrett Dawson.
She is survived by her son Roy Franklin Quick, Jr. (Ellen) of San Diego, CA, daughters Patricia Q. Pugh (Reggie) and Carolyn Q. Anders of Lynchburg; grandchildren Jean Lorraine Howell (Michael) of Roswell, GA, Jordan Taylor Pugh of Baltimore, MD, Melissa Kaufman Quick (Justin) and Brian Franklin Anders of NY, NY; and great grandchildren Taylor Lorraine Howell and Benjamin David Howell.
Additional surviving family members include nephews Rev. Christopher T. Hayes III (Julie) of Culpepper, VA; Thomas Owen Dawson and Harry Wynn Dawson (Nancy) of Madison Heights, VA; nieces Elizabeth Hayes Wince (Cleve) of Warrenton, VA, and Pamela Dawson Carney of Jackson, TN; and sister-in-law Ruth Quick Wright of Bracey, VA.
In addition to her parents, also preceding Mary were her brothers Stephen Yates Dawson (Fay) and Owen Barksdale Dawson (Josephine) and sister Elizabeth Dawson Hayes.
Mary was a graduate of Pleasant View High School in Amherst County and Virginia Commercial College of Lynchburg. She was employed by Craddock Terry Shoe Co and served as secretary of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church for fifteen years. She was a long time member of Chestnut Hill and always treasured her many friends there.
You could say Mary was the family historian, filling albums with countless dated and identified photos.
She loved to share stories about her family, friends and special pets - her dog Brownie who adored Roy, and her horse Fancy.
Mary loved the arts - painting, writing poems and playing the piano. She also loved to read and work puzzles. And she especially enjoyed attending local performances with her best friend Georgia Mason.
Mary was a loving wife and mother and perhaps found even greater joy in being a part of her grandchildren’s lives, celebrating their many achievements. She loved the family beach vacations at Myrtle Beach and Nags Head and spending the holidays together - sharing everyone’s favorite foods including her Christmas sour-lemon gelatin and fresh coconut cakes.
The family is grateful for the loving care and support provided by the wonderful staff at Runk & Pratt, Leesville Rd. and the comfort and compassion of Seven Hills Hospice.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service in celebration of Mary’s life, conducted by the Reverends C.T. Hayes III and Vernie Barrow, will be held at Whitten Timberlake Chapel on Friday, July 3 at 11a.m. Visitation with the family will be from 10 -11 a.m., prior to the service.
