Born in New Britain, Connecticut, on July 27, 1935, Robert was the son of the late Paul Theodore Enstam and Ruth Wiggins Enstam. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and later retired from Mobil Oil Company. After retirement, Robert found what he often called his favorite job—driving a school bus for Fairfax County Public Schools. Affectionately known as “Capt. Bob” by the many children who rode his bus, he took great pride and joy in caring for them each day.
Robert had a lifelong love of boating and spent many happy hours sailing in both the Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake Bay. He and his wife also shared a passion for travel and RVing, camping in every state in the U.S., including Alaska, as well as Canada. They also greatly enjoyed cruising together.
He is survived by three daughters, Joan Enstam Baird, Karen Enstam Gehl (Michael), and Lois Enstam Hartigan (Paul); six grandchildren, Matthew Enstam Baird, Emily Enstam Baird, Paul Bernard Gehl, Sara Frances Gehl, Bryan Enstam Hartigan, and Kelly Ann Hartigan; and one sister, Ruth Enstam Getbehead (Jon).
A memorial service celebrating Robert’s life and faith will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Mountain View Church, with Pastor Miriam Dakin officiating.
The family will receive friends and host an open house at his home following the service from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Tunnel to Towers, www.t2t.org.
