Nécrologie de Robert Lee Toney lll
Robert “Bobby” Lee Toney, lll, 82, of Forest passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Peggy Toney. Bobby and Peggy were high school sweethearts and married for 62 wonderful years. Their life-long commitment and love for one another is perhaps their greatest legacy for the family. Born in Lynchburg on July 5, 1938, Robert was a son of the late Robert Toney, Jr. and Mattie Toney. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School (’57) and served in the Virginia National Guard. He was a talented athlete and enjoyed sports of all kinds. He was an avid hunter, golfer, bargain shopper and family man. Perhaps his best hunting buddy and partner was long-time friend, Barry Ferguson. The two of them spent many years hunting deer, quail, and turkey throughout the area. Robert was a former Club Champion at Cedar Hills and Ivy Hill Golf Courses. He was a long-time member at Colonial Hills Golf Course where he developed many life-time friendships. For many years, he could be seen playing with Glenn White, Reggie Hawkins and Kendall “Fuzz” White. Robert worked for C&P Telephone and Verizon for approximately 35 years and loved keeping in touch with his phone company family even after retirement. Perhaps his greatest joy were his seven grandchildren. To make sure that they would always stay close, he even went to the extent of installing a pool at their family home during his retirement. Robert enjoyed filling lots of ice cream cones and grilling food on the deck for his grandchildren. He never missed a cheerleading competition, soccer game, track meet, basketball game, lacrosse game, dance recital or special celebration with his grandchildren. Each of them made him so proud to be called “Grandaddy.” Robert looked forward to trying out the “latest and greatest” gadget and going to all the Krogers in town to get the best deal on his favorite ice cream. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Leigh Ruhland and her husband Rod, John Toney and his wife Traci, and Donnie Toney and his wife Kendra, all of Forest; a brother, Wayne Toney, and his wife Brenda of Madison Heights; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bennie and Herbert Sprouse of Lynchburg; his grandchildren, Emily Ruhland, Peyton Toney, Robbie Toney, Elizabeth Ruhland, Erin Toney, Kathryn Toney, and John Toney; a nephew and three nieces. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Virginia Memorial Park with Rev. Janet Hawkins officiating. Robert will be available for viewing from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
