Sammy was born on December 26, 1957, to Aubrey Howard Mason Sr. and Essie Gertrude George Mason. He married Lona Gray Mason in 1976. His wife and parents preceded him in death.
Sammy, also lovingly known as Captain and Papa, was blessed with three sons: Sammy Ray Mason II (Kimberlie), Bruce Glenn Mason (Drena), and Joey Dillard Mason (Jasan). He was “Papa” to Alexis M. Mendoza (Dee), Deon S. Mason (Seth), Chad W. Mason, and Lonetta Z. Mason; three granddogs—Pepe, Ricky, and Troy; and four grand-kittens—Nibs, Miles, Chicken, and Sam.
He is also survived by all five of his brothers: Aubrey Howard Mason II (Dean), David Reid Mason, Glenn Cornell Mason (Loretta), Bobby Wayne Mason (Toni), and Mike Landon Mason; and one SISTA, Louann Mason Stevens (Bobby). He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sammy was a jack of all trades. He worked for Dinner Bell and as a roofer, contributing to many homes and projects throughout his community with skill and dedication.
He grew up in a family where preparing hogs each year was more than just work—it was tradition, heritage, and a moment of connection. He continued that tradition with devotion throughout his life.
He loved golfing, scratch tickets, card games, playing pool, and most of all, coming together and having a good time with family and friends. Quick-witted and full of humor, he could deliver a comeback faster than you could blink. He loved making people smile and laugh and was truly one of a kind.
Though he endured the heartache of losing his wife Lona and longed to be reunited with her, underneath it all, he always smiled—doing what his mama said: smile.

Condolences can be sent through Whitten Timberlake. A memorial will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
