Susan Gilbert

Susan L. Mays Gilbert, 73, of Campbell County, died, Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Raymond Trinkle Gilbert. Born November 26, 1939, in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late James Howard Mays and the late Rosa Ellen Floyd Mays.

Susan was a retired private caretaker, and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. Susan was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She never met a stranger, for she loved everybody.

In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by one son, Hank Patrick Tyree; two brothers, Fred Clarence Steppe and James Woody Mays; and one sister, Nancy Madeline Martin.

In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by three children, Herbert H. Tyree and his wife Jennifer Watson Tyree of Cumberland, Frances Ellen Tyree of Madison Heights and Joseph Daniel Tyree of Rustburg; two step-sons, Raymond Gilbert, Jr. of Lynchburg and Michael Thomas Gilbert and his wife Rebecca of Charlottesville; two step-daughters, Julia Carwile and her husband Kyle of Lynchburg and Betty Davidson of Lynchburg; one sister, Irene Odell Martin of Lynchburg; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
