Thomas “Tommy” Avon McDowell, Jr., 71, of Lynchburg, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marianne McDowell.
Born on August 16, 1942 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Thomas A. McDowell, Sr. And Pauline K. McDowell.
Thomas served our country in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War and was retired from Kennedy’s Tile Company. He enjoyed collecting antique treasures, hunting, and making silly jokes. He was a kind and gentle man that could make anyone smile. He loved his Thursday lunches with his ROMEO buddy’s and he also enjoyed spending time with the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging Group.
He is survived by his daughters, Lisa McDowell of Roanoke and Amy Lightner and her husband, Bryan of Virginia Beach; his grandchildren, Madysen and Blake Lightner; his sister, Polly Waters and husband, Jerry of PA; his cousin, Karen Kennedy of Lynchburg; his niece, Laurie Scigliano and husband Dave of AZ and their children; and his nephew, Patrick Waters and wife Lisa of PA and their children.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 1 pm at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. Military Honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 16.
