

Born in Lynchburg, January 23, 1934 he was a son of the late John Richard Smith and Elsie Paone Smith. He worked for Consumers Dornin-Adams for many years and later retired from Southern Air and was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. He was known by his many friends over the years as “Jabo” and later was affectionately known by his family as “Papa Birdie” because of his love of birds.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving companion, Barbara K. Deaner; two brothers, James Smith and Paul Smith; one sister, Marion Smith and one great grandson, Evan Michael Cyrus.
He is survived by four daughters, Katheryn Smith Cyrus of Lynchburg, Patricia Smith Ward and her husband David of Evington, Linda Smith George Walton and her husband Jeff of Lynchburg and Pamela Smith Foster and her husband Kevin of Lynchburg; one brother, John R. Smith, Jr. of Madison Heights; eight grandchildren, Tommy Cyrus and his wife Roxanne, John Cyrus and his wife Jennifer, Ashley Walls and her husband Ben, Daniel Wilson, Zachary George, Zachary Walton, Cassie Foster and Maggie White; and five great grandchildren, Emma, Ella, Eastyn, Caleb and Ean. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Gladys Martin and her husband Glen along with a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and many friends.
The family would also like to gratefully acknowledge Wanda Childress for the loving care, support and friendship she provided to our father and our family.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg.
